Happy International Women's Day
The National Workers Union Youth Council (NWUYC) joins Saint Lucia and the world in recognizing International Women's Day under the theme "DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality."
Officially recognized by the United Nations in 1977, International Women's Day first emerged from the activities of labor movements at the turn of the twentieth century in North America and across Europe. Since those early years, International Women's Day has assumed a new global dimension for women in developed and developing countries. It is a day that recognizes women for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic, or political.
This year's theme, "DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality," highlights the need for inclusive and transformative technology and digital education. In fact, the essence of this theme speaks to equality, a fundamental pillar of the trade union movement. As a youth organization tasked with advocating for young people, emphasizing the relevance of Innovation and technology in a digitized world is paramount.
Innovation defines the role of the entrepreneur; it speaks to a society's responsibility to shift its people and rethink its processes to meet the demands of an ever-evolving world.
President of the NWUYC, Tonisia Charles, says, "Innovation is more than meets the eye. I believe the woman should be awarded her rightful position at the table to develop a futuristic plan on how we decipher it."
As the catalyst for the advancement and development of young workers through advocacy, empowerment, and equal opportunities, the National Workers Union takes this opportunity to acknowledge the true catalyst of the world. You have given birth to sons, daughters, societies, and nations. You have birthed the world. We salute you!
